“Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)” was written in the 1950s by composer Jay Livingston and lyricist Ray Evans. It was originally performed by American actress Doris Day in the Alfred Hitchcock movie “The Man Who Knew Too Much”. The song immediately shot to the #2 spot on the Billboard Hot 20 and the #1 spot on the UK Singles Chart.

The FA Cup adopted it as its unofficial anthem in 1976 when fans of Manchester United started singing it in the stands before and during the final. Since then, it’s been a mainstay, with fans chanting the lyrics like this:

“Que sera sera,

Whatever will be will be,

We’re going to Wembley,

Que sera sera”

Marching on Together (Leeds United)

“Leeds, Leeds, Leeds” or “Marching on Together” was written by Les Reed and Barry Mason in 1972, when the team reached the FA Cup finals. Since then, every game at Elland Road begins with the song being played, and an acronym based on “Marching On Together” is often used in social media, usually as the hashtag #MOT, when fans are talking about the club.

The song’s unofficial title comes from its chorus:

“Marching On Together!

We’re gonna see you win

Na na na na na na

We are so proud

We shout it out loud we love you, Leeds! Leeds! Leeds!”

Cant Del Barça (Barcelona)

Cant Del Barça (Chant of Barca) was commissioned by the Catalan club Barcelona to celebrate its 75th birthday in 1974. It was first performed before a match between Barca and the East German national team at Camp Nou, sung by a choir of more than 3500 singers. The song was composed by Manuel Valls, and the lyrics were written by Jaume Picas and Josep Maria Espinàs. The song goes like this:

Stern Des Südens (Bayern Munich)

“Stern Des Südens” (The Star of the South) was composed by Willy Astor, with lyrics by stadium announcer Stephan Lehmann in 1998. Originally, it was performed by Bonfire singer Claus Lessmann. The song originally appeared on a compilation disc, but it was also released as a single, reaching #68 on the German charts.

“FC Bayern, Stern des Südens, du wirst niemals untergeh ‘n,

Weil wir in guten wie in schlechten Zeiten zueinander steh’n!”

(“FC Bayern, star of the south, you will never go down,

Because we stand together in good times and bad!”)

You’ll Never Walk Alone (Liverpool FC)

Finally, here’s the one football anthem every fan has heard at least once in their lifetime: “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. Originally written as a show tune for a musical, it was re-recorded by the Liverpool-based Gerry and the Pacemakers in 1963, reaching the top charts in several countries. Soon after, Liverpool fans started chanting it at Anfield, and soon after, it was “adopted” by Liverpool FC as their anthem. So much so, that its title has become the official motto of the club, printed on its coat of arms. The song is played from the announcement system before every match at Anfield.

“Walk on, walk on

With hope in your heart

And you’ll never walk alone”
